Dating back to 1921, Emmett Joseph Culligan discovered the water-softening qualities of a greenish-black mineral, called Zeolite, which "magically" removed the hardness from water. While pacing the halls of the hospital, anxiously awaiting the birth of his daughter, Emmett Culligan found himself in the basement boiler room, curiously observing two large cylindrical tanks that were installed to remove water hardness. The tanks were intended to extract particulates in the water used for the hospital's laundry. Cleaner, softer water resulted in cleaner, softer linens and saved on the use of harsh soap. Culligan was intrigued with the concept of water purification.

Further research and adaptation led Culligan to the discovery of a home filtration system that produced "water softer than rain." Such benefits as softer skin, cleaner clothes and no diaper rash led Culligan to expand his invention to the residential market. This deionization process of filtering water improved the quality of life for entire families and entire communities.

The owners and employees of Culligan Water of Salt Lake, Ogden and Orem believe in supporting the community. Donations have been given to the homeless shelter, food bank, local charities, and various philanthropic organizations.
